タイトル:The Multimodal and Conceptual Metaphor of “Sound” and “Music”
キーワード:multimodal metaphor, Metaphor Identification Procedure of Manga (MIPM), synesthetic metaphor, corpus-based
備考:This study investigates how people conceptualize the sound (human voice) and music in terms of multimodal metaphor and conceptual metaphor. The research material includes corpus and multimodal material in order to get an explicit overview of sound and music.
The corpus data are collected from COPENS and more than 2000 examples have been analyzed by using Metaphorical Pattern Analysis (MPA) proposed by Stefanowitsch (2006). Pitch, volume, timbre and tone are four important voice properties while describing human voices. The voice properties that easily be determined by machines, such as volume and pitch, tend to use ontological metaphor; on the other hand, voice properties such as timbre or tone tend to use metonymy.
For the multimodal data, this study proposes Metaphor Identification Procedure of Manga (MIPM) as a method in order to identify the metaphor of musical-themed manga. Totally 4 genres, 6 different manga and more than 1000 music-related panels have been analyzed. Four synesthetic metaphors and seven synesthetic metonymies have been discovered. It is noticeable that music tends to be transferred to sight and touch; moreover, the pictorial representation of music is in fact similar to the results of sound symbolism.
Overall, by analyzing both corpus and multimodal examples, the study enhances our understanding of conceptualization of sound and music. A new methodology for identifying metaphor in manga has been proposed as well.
